My Writing Roots
I am not totally sure when I really started writing. I do remember that I was an avid reader throughout school. Several events I was privileged to be in and had to write my own speech in high school. I participated in an Oratorical contest and won at a church conference. Between junior and senior high school, I wrote and directed a play for the national youth convention which we performed in the convention with much acclaim. Ranking in the top six in my high school graduating class, I was chosen to be one of the speakers and had to write my speech. I received a standing ovation. I guess my best writing days started in high school. I remember being on the newscasters team at my high school. I had to decipher the news for the day and week and write it in a proper format for the listeners to hear over the school's PA System. There was one particular broadcast that one of my teachers came rushing into the office where I was reporting from and she was so excited. She gave me amazing accolades on how well it was written and the eloquence of how I presented it. I still chuckle today because that was my English teacher and she was a tough one. But that day, she stirred something positive on the inside of me, I believe my love for writing grew that day. Thank you Mrs. L. S. Williams of Williston Senior High School, Wilmington, N. C.
My Writing Style
In some of my books, my style of writing is in first person. It is written in a way to be sure I am speaking to the heart of the reader whether expressing deep or suttle emotions. I want them to be the book in a sense, in that particular section, as in my book/manual, "Loving My Spouse From A-Z Volume 1. I want them to personally feel whatever applies to them; therefore, I write in that manner hoping to get my message across easier. I feel this is particularly important when it is dealing with relationships, spirituality or a person's emotions affected by their frustrating issues in life.
When used in fiction, I think "first person" gives sort of a reality twist which is sometimes intended to teach a lesson or share values. When we can interject ourselves into the story by using that one word, "I", I believe we enjoy or relate to the book, perhaps, on a different level, maybe even more personal. However, it can also be limiting in fiction because the only person I am connected with in a sense is me; therefore, it is necessary to also write in second and third person, at times.
I think each book, each play or drama, each poem or song, even sermons that I write or preach unscripted all have their own style depending on the audience, the time period, the location and probably most important the conclusive intention of the writing or speech.
My writing style varies. At times, I write as the author addressing and conversing with the reader as if I am in the room in person with them sometimes expressing my deep emotions. Another style I may use is the storyteller style which is partially seen in my book, "Love Remains Always", and in my children's books. Whatever my style used, I hope it is effective and accomplishes my intention with the reader and recipient of my work.
